Armed Forces Value Attitude Over Aptitude

HELLO FRIENDS,

Other than the ARMED FORCES, there is no ORGANISATION which spends so much TIME, MONEY and MANPOWER to select its OFFICERS.

You must have wondered what is so special that the SSB tries to microscopically check in a young boy or a girl.

There is a raging debate among the HR personnel on what should be the priority or philosophy of the company for hiring their personnel: ATTITUDE or APTITUDE.

In this article, I shall limit myself to defining these TWO TERMS and sometime later WRITE MORE on them.

Armed Forces Value Attitude Over Aptitude

Aptitude

An Aptitude is a component of competence to do a certain kind of work at a certain level.

Outstanding aptitude can be called as “talent” Aptitude can be both PHYSICAL and MENTAL.

It is an INBORN POTENTIAL whether developed or underdeveloped.

It is different from the ability as an ability is gained through LEARNING and KNOWLEDGE.

APTITUDE and INTELLIGENCE are positively correlated. The PABT for pilots in IAF is an APTITUDE TEST.

The ARMED FORCES want to check the innate, INBORN POTENTIAL and maybe because of this one can take this test (PABT) only once in a lifetime.

You may have observed that some of your friends are very good at GAMES or SINGING, or DANCING, or MECHANICAL JOBS etc although they have not learnt that activity that is aptitude.

Attitude

ATTITUDE refers to a SET OF EMOTIONS, BELIEFS and BEHAVIOURS towards a particular object, person, thing or event.

Attitudes are often result of EXPERIENCE and UPBRINGING and they can have a POWERFUL INFLUENCE on BEHAVIOUR. ATTITUDE can be POSITIVE, NEGATIVE or NEUTRAL.

Some attitudes can be UNCONSCIOUS BELIEFS. One’s attitude reflects how one FEELS and behaves in a given SITUATION.

In SSB, the OIR tests check the intelligence rating. The PABT in IAF tests the aptitude for flying.

In all the other tests i.e Psychological tests, GTO tests and interview the OLQs and the attitude of a candidate is tested.

Once selected, the TRAINING brings out the POTENTIAL and NECESSARY skill sets.

You may have realised that a POSITIVE ATTITUDE  cannot be developed in a day, month or even years. It is a CONTINUOUS PROCESS.

Remember, all of us have some APTITUDE or TALENT. Identify them, NURTURE them and DEVELOP them.

Be SINCERE, HUMBLE, DETERMINED, TOLERANT, DILIGENT and stay away from ANGER, PESSIMISM, RESENTMENT, SELF-DOUBT, JEALOUSY, INFERIORITY and FRUSTRATION.

A lot to do in life friend !! March on
